Welcome to Historic Bethel German Colony located in Bethel, Missouri. Founded as a religious colony in 1844 by Dr. Wilhelm Keil and his German American followers, Bethel became the most successful and long-lasting communal society in Missouri. The one hundred plus residents who live here today invite you to become acquainted with their unique town which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During its 35 year existence, the original Bethel German Colony supported such thriving industries as a tannery, mill, tailor shop, distillery, as well as wool carding and spinning. Over thirty original colony structures survive today much as they did 150 years ago. Some of these properties are owned by Historic Bethel German Colony, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Bethel’s cultural heritage. These homes and businesses contain 19th century furnishings and are regularly open for tours. Located forty-five miles west of Hannibal on the banks of the North River in Shelby County, Missouri, Bethel German Colony hosts festivals and events celebrating its unique history and cultural heritage. These include: Children's Historic Heritage Days
The Colony carries on its rich musical heritage by featuring the Colony Brass Band in its brightly painted bandwagon at some of these festivals. Come visit this fascinating historical site and live again in a time when life, land, food and clothing were shared by a colony whose basic philosophy was “do unto others as you would have them do onto you”. Bethel activities and programs are sponsored and funded by the Missouri
Arts Council and Historic Bethel German Colony, Inc., a non-profit organization
dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Bethel’s architecture
and culture.
